This seminar provides first-semester MA students of British and Postcolonial Studies with a comprehensive introduction to the field of Postcolonial Studies. After an overview of the emergence of Postcolonial Studies as an academic discipline, and an introduction to eminent critics and influential works, students will engage with some of the key texts (by reading short excerpts, e.g. from Shakespeare's The Tempest to Said's Orientalism) in order to explore some of the key concepts in Postcolonial Studies (e.g. colonialism, ethnicity, hybridity, Indigeneity, Orientalism, slavery, Third Space, and transculturality). Studying a selection of theoretical and literary texts will contribute to an understanding of the dynamic field of Postcolonial Studies.
