Around 1850, London was the biggest city on the planet. This seminar will give you a chance to learn about this most extraordinary of extraordinary places. We are going to look at everyday life, gender roles, wealth and poverty, crime, nineteenth-century technology (the coming of the railways, the Underground, electricity, the telephone), food, gender and many things besides. We are also going to study the depictions and perceptions of London in nineteenth-century literature, the visual arts and music (novels, journalism, travel literature, paintings, early street photography, music hall songs etc.). As there will be no face-to-face teaching due to the Corona situation, texts, images and other material will be made available online. Information about the study tour will be provided in the first seminar session.

Requirements: Thorough preparation for each session, active participation, plus anything that might be required according to your Modulhandbuch/Studienordnung. As always: think, enjoy (!), annotate, and look things up if necessary.
