This lecture course will provide students with a structured introduction to postcolonial literatures in English, i.e. the literature that has emerged in the context of formerly colonised societies and regions across the Anglophone world, from the colonial past to the postcolonial present. While it is impossible to discuss the entire scope of texts, topics, authors and genres from the vast territories that have been affected by British colonial rule, the course will include a wide range of texts from the Caribbean, Ireland, South Asia, West Africa and Australia. The final section will focus on the contemporary African diaspora, on multicultural British literature, and on narratives of migration and flight in contemporary post-9/11 world.
