Electromagnetic radiation with a frequency between 0.3 THz and 10 THz is often referred as “THz radiation”. THz radiation is located between microwave radiation and far infrared radiation and is rather unexplored. It is often called “THz Gap” since the frequencies are difficult to realize with optic approaches (necessary energy band gap too small) and electric approaches (frequency too high). However, many applications ranging from communications over non-destructive testing to fundamental research have been identified in this frequency range.
The lecture will cover the following topics:
- Basics of terahertz interaction with matter
- Generation and detection of broadband terahertz pulses
- Continuous wave terahertz sources and detectors
- Terahertz optics
- Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy
- Selected applications of terahertz radiation
