The output of Nigerian Literature since the
1950s is impressive. Nadine Gordimer called Chinua Achebe “father of modern
African literature” and Wole Soyinka was the first black African to win the
Nobel Prize for literature in 1986. The literary scene in Nigeria has been a
vibrant one ever since. Students will be
introduced to contemporary Nigerian society and culture and we will discuss
the works of the younger generation of authors such as Teju Cole, Helon Habila
and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie among others. Students are also asked to read the following works: Chibundu Onuzo’s
Welcome to Lagos and Lesley Nneka Arimah’s What it Means When a Man Falls from
the Sky.
