The spoken word is not only the origin of all literary texts but also an umbrella term for a diverse group of oral arts centered on the performance of poetic texts. With its musical qualities, word play, and emotive styles, poetry is a genre that can, arguably, only be fully appreciated when read out loud. Slam poetry, a competitive and entertaining form of presenting poetry, has recently made the genre more accessible for larger crowds and new audiences. In this seminar, we will therefore explore how artists such as Kae Tempest, Sarah Kay, Synik or Andrea Gibson are shaping the new face of performed poetry. We will also look back to the roots of Spoken Word and Slam Poetry and, depending on your interests, investigate the many intersections with hip hop, jazz or comedy. Tuesdays, 14-16h |
