The 19th Century was a time of wonder – and spooky stories. The vampire had his first appearance in modern form, not only did Bram Stoker make him a Transsylvanian, other authors used this story of a bloodsucking „Übermensch“ to make their fellow Victorians scared, and excited! Vampires transgressed moral, religious, and even real borders. In this seminar, we will have a look at the Vampire, and how he conquered hearts, minds and necks of Victorian London. As the eternal stranger, he embodied everything that people feared. And sometimes, he came back from those far away colonies that the British Empire had claimed for herself.
