In this seminar, we will explore the rich vocabulary of the English
language in the past and present. Looking at where words come from and
how they change, we will learn more about the influences of other
languages that have shaped the structure of the English lexicon to this
day. Furthermore, we will explore the ways in which we use words to
encode meaning, the study of which is called semantics. Other explorations will lead us into the realm of lexicography,
the activity or profession of writing dictionaries. Texts for the
seminar will be provided to the students in the moodle room at the
beginning of the semester.
