In this seminar, we will explore language(s) in Ireland in the past and present. Looking at the historical background and the peoples and linguistic influences that have shaped the island, we will learn more about Irish. This Celtic variety is not to be confused with Irish English (the variety of English spoken in Ireland) and is still maintained in Ireland to this day. We will learn more about features of Irish English, detect linguistic developments on the island today, investigate its perception and examine its representation in literature, film and music. Texts and resources for the seminar will be provided to the students in the moodle room at the beginning of the semester.
