Beyond her novel The Handmaid’s Tale, recently popularized again through the eponymous television series, Margaret Atwood has produced numerous provocative (prose) poems, short stories, novels, essays, plays, libretti, and comics – on her native Canada and its literature(s), on the climate crisis and environmental destruction, on women, men, and on the relationships between them. In this seminar we will read The Handmaid’s Tale and examine some of the novel’s multimedia adaptations, of course, but we will explore Atwood’s engaging, witty, and razor-sharp style across a variety of other literary genres as well.

Students will need to buy a copy of The Handmaid’s Tale.
