This class will explore American themes as they appear in thinking about race and racism, especially in the wake of highly publicized police killings of African Americans in the last eight to ten years. The ways in which definitions of social justice, DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) programs, and of white privilege evolve in relation to American ideas of equality and American forms of religion will be explored. The above texts—nearly all available as Kindle, too—will be supplemented by online links to essays by writers offering conflicting views of this explosive topic; we’ll read excerpts from Amy Chua, Jill Lepore, Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay as well. Students are invited to contribute writers they find important to the discussion.
