The quote is taken from Andrea Levy’s novel Fruit of the Lemon (1999) and refers to the multi-layered and intricate relationship between Great Britain, “the mother country”, and “her children”, the numerous countries and islands around the globe that were colonised by her. The country itself has seen a flux of immigration to its shores for many centuries which have contributed to the country’s perception as a multicultural and heterogeneous society. In this course we will focus on multiculturalism and its impact by analysing two novels, Andrea Levy’s Small Island (2004) and Bernadine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other (2019).
