In this seminar, we will explore languages in the Celtic parts of the British Isles in the past and present. Starting with the historical background and the peoples and linguistic influences that have shaped the island, we will learn more about the Celtic languages, the traces they have left behind in today’s English and their current political status. As part of this course, we will discuss features of Celtic Englishes, trace linguistic developments on the British Islea today and investigate language perception. Finally, we will zoom in on their representation in literature, film and music – all part of a rich cultural heritage that has been shaping Celtic identity to this day.

Texts and resources for the seminar will be provided to the students at the beginning of the semester. Students are expected to participate actively in class.
