Humanity has been fascinated with the weird and eerie for ages. With the Victorian Age ghost stories became increasingly popular, a trend that has continued through the 20th century until today, where the fascination with the unexplainable remains unbroken. This seminar will introduce students to a number of texts that deal with the uncanny in various ways. We will have a look at motifs such as that of the doppelgänger, of spectres and spirits, etc. and see how these have changed and developed over time. A number of texts will be made available through Moodle, but students are asked to obtain their own copies of the following novels: John Harding - Florence & Giles (The Borough Press) Susan Hill - The Woman in Black (Vintage Press) |
