In this seminar, we will have a closer look at language(s) in Irish
society in the past and present. Looking at the historical background
and the peoples and linguistic influences that have shaped the island,
we will learn more about Irish. This Celtic variety is not to be
confused with Irish English (the variety of English spoken in Ireland)
and is still maintained in Ireland to this day. Moving onward, we will
learn about the current features of Irish English, detect linguistic
developments on the island today, investigate its perception and examine
its representation in literature and film.
