This seminar is about contemporary (20th and 21st-century) postcolonial short fiction. After an introduction to the short story as a genre and to the field of postcolonial, multicultural and Black British literature, we will read and discuss a range of exciting short stories by acclaimed authors, including Sam Selvon, Merle Collins, Hanif Kureishi, Jackie Kay, Andrea Levy, Rajeev Balasubramanyam and Shereen Pandit. Students may have the chance to engage with the work of New-Zealand poet and short story writer Jan Kemp, who has been invited to give a reading during the summer semester. Please purchase copies of the two Reclam booklets listed below; a selection of further stories and critical texts will be made available via a Moodle course.
