Traveling the diverse urban landscapes from Atlantic to Pacific, this class will investigate different US-American cities and their regional and cultural particularities. In particular debates on the use of and access to (public) spaces, a new focus on walkability and/or sustainability as well as the scripting of urban space through residents, tourists, marketeers, and developers alike will be of importance in this context. Grouped around this topic the seminar will pay special attention to key competences in urban, literary, and cultural studies, such as research and reading skills, textual analysis, and text production.
