Autumn and winter are traditionally the seasons when many people are drawn to dark and spooky stories, so what could be a better time to talk about this genre of literature than the winter term? In this seminar we will have a look at uncanny, spooky and sometimes slightly gory texts written after 1900. Among many others, we will discuss concepts such as the gothic, hauntology, modern takes on the Victorian Christmas ghost story and the role of women in the horror genre. The selection of texts ranges from poetry of the early Modernist period via the pulp horror fiction of the mid-20th century to postmodern novels and films.

Students are asked to get their own copies of:

Anne Rice - Interview with the Vampire

John Harding - Florence & Giles

Other than that, you'll find all the texts you'll need for the seminar on this Moodle, neatly arranged according to the respective session. Please prepare the texts for the relevant course session and bring them to class with you!
