In this course we will investigate how individual speakers do or do not change their linguistic habits during the course of their life. The seminar gives an overview over the mechanisms of language change, both across time as well as across the life-course of the speaker. We will consider the linguistic effects of different life stages, such as the onset of schooling, the transition to university, the "middle years” as well as retirement. This course will be hands-on and we will investigate a range of changes in progress at different levels of linguistics structure in a cohort of 6 speakers who graduated from university and have embarked on different career trajectories.
