This lecture course aims to provide an overview of American literature from its Native American beginnings to the present. The class will introduce you to the main periods of American literature and their cultural as well as historical contexts, to about sixty of the most prominent American authors, and to a variety of individual texts. Background lectures will be complemented by discussions of passages from many literary genres including prose fiction, poetry, drama, essays, sermons, and children’s literature.
