The students will get an overview of the use of living systems (i.e. microbial communities, microorganisms or biological molecules such as enzymes) for the production of relevant sub-stances and process optimization for human benefit. Starting with a general overview of biotechnological applications and significance, classical fermentations in food industries, special production strains, biocatalysis by enzymes as well as environmental biotechnology will be discussed

MIGRATION AND LABOR IN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

A world of workers is on the move. Migrants’ participation in contemporary economies is simultaneously a direct result of and a major factor shaping the continuities and transformations of global capitalism. The recent global pandemic has rendered visible the conflicts around migrant labour, particularly when it comes to the fundamental significance that foreign workers play in the most substentive sectors of employment while their working conditions are increasingly deteriorating. The increased public attention to the sectors of meat processing, construction and transport (among others) did not bring substantial improvement in working conditions, but it made it abundently clear that it is workers without access to citizenship rights who are exposed to the most gruesome practices of exploitation and impoverishment. 

Existing studies that focus on quantitive parameters of labour market segmentation and integration operate within nation state frameworks and are insufficiently prepared to deal with the transnationalisation of production, as well as the regulation and recruitment of labour. This seminar brings together important contributions from the sociology of work and migration research to offer a more comprehensive understanding of the intersections between labour and migration regimes on a global scale, as well as to the socio-economic and spatial contexts that give rise to complex forms of precarious work among migrants. It discusses the role that migrant status and the differentiation of (non-) citizenship conditions play in the construction of precarious workers. Furthermore, it addresses other non-work related factors that lead to the hierarchisation of workers and channel them into low-status and ‘low-skilled’ jobs on the basis of ascribed gender, ethnic and racial lines of difference. 

The seminar will familiarize students with important current debates on the nature of capitalist labour relations and struggles of migration, as well as their corresponding conceptual extensions, such as ‘precarisation’, ‘fragmentation’, ‘differential inclusion’, and ‘overexploitation’. In reading and discussing the seminar’s key texts, participants will be familiarized with empirical examples from different (trans)national contexts, in addition, they will be introduced and invited to engage with migrant workers’ struggles in Duisburg. 

Structure and content

The seminar will be held in English.

The seminar involves weekly group discussions of one academic source (text-based, audio or visual recording). Additional sources will also be recommended throughout the course. 

Classes

All students are required to do the weekly readings and homework. This involves reading all of the assigned literature for a particular week, being able to summarise the readings, as well as to compare different views (if the readings contradict each other), or underline their similarities.

The module is concluded with an oral exam that covers both the seminar attended by the students and the two lectures (‘Arbeit Beruf Organisation’ and ‘Migration und Globalisierung’).

COURSE SCHEDULE

Das digitale Seminar beschäftigt sich mit theoretischen Erklärungsansätzen zum Zusammenhang zwischen einer (familiären) Zuwanderungsgeschichte und den Bildungschancen von Kindern und Jugendlichen. Dazu werden wir Podcasts zu aktuellen empirischen Studien aus Deutschland und anderen Ländern erstellen, in denen wir diskutieren, welche Erklärungsfaktoren empirisch besonders bedeutsam sind, und wie diese in den Studien jeweils untersucht und gemessen wurden. Die Prüfungsleistung ist eine Hausarbeit; erwartet wird eine aktive Einbringung in die vorgesehene Gruppenarbeit und die Vorstellung der Podcasts am Ende des Seminars.

Migration and the integration of migrants are topics of great societal, social and political importance in Germany. Due to declining birth rates, gaps in the labor market and unpredictable changes in the patterns of migration, the subject of migration has gained attention in recent years. Naturally, interest in the integration of migrants, as well as the role of the state in supporting this process, has followed suit.

Focusing primarily on Germany, students will look at the phenomena of migration, including the motivations and influences on the side of migrants, as well as the interests and abilities of states to steer migration processes. The process of integration, the challenges faced by migrants and the circumstances that can promote or hinder integration will also be dealt with.

Participation in the seminar in English is encouraged, but not necessary. All module requirements will also be absolvable in German or English.

Migration und die Integration von Migrant*innen sind Themen von großer gesellschaftlicher, sozialer und politischer Bedeutung in Deutschland. Aufgrund sinkender Geburtenraten, Lücken auf dem Arbeitsmarkt und unvorhersehbarer Veränderungen in den Migrationsmustern hat das Thema Migration in den letzten Jahren an Aufmerksamkeit gewonnen. Natürlich ist auch das Interesse an der Integration von Migranten sowie die Rolle des Staates bei der Unterstützung dieses Prozesses gewachsen.

Mit Fokus auf Deutschland werden sich die Studierenden mit den Phänomenen der Migration beschäftigen, einschließlich der Motivationen und Einflüsse auf Seiten der Migrant*innen sowie mit den Interessen und Fähigkeiten von Staaten, Migrationsprozesse zu steuern. Behandelt werden auch der Prozess der Integration, die Herausforderungen für Migrant*innen und die Umstände, die die Integration fördern oder behindern können.

Die Teilnahme am Seminar in englischer Sprache ist erwünscht, aber nicht zwingend erforderlich. Prüfungsleistungen können auch in deutscher oder englischer Sprache absolviert werden.

Das Ziel des Seminars ist es, die Studierenden mit den grundlegenden Begriffen, Theorien und Konzepten der sozialwissenschaftlichen Migrationsforschung vertraut zu machen. Auf Basis zentraler Texte werden wir uns intensiv mit Fragen der Migration, der Integration und Teilhabe im weitesten Sinne und in Bezug auf verschiedene, gesellschaftlich bedeutsame Bereiche beschäftigen. Neben der theoretisch-konzeptionellen Auseinandersetzung und Diskussion wird auch immer wieder der Bezug zu empirischen Studien und dem aktuellen, sozialwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisstand hergestellt. Während des Semesters wird das Lesen von Grundlagentexten und die Übernahme eines Referats erwartet. Als Prüfungsleistung für das Modul kann in diesem Seminar eine Hausarbeit geschrieben werden (20-25 Seiten).
