What is American Studies? How can we define the discipline? What are the questions that animate our field? This course will help you to frame tentative answers for these questions. It provides an overview of some of the most important and influential (a) areas of American Studies (e.g. early America, Enlightenment, industrialization, globalization); (b) approaches to the field of U.S. American literature, culture and media (e.g. New Criticism, Myth and Symbol School, ideology critique, new historicism, transnationalism); (c) methods and theories employed in the study of North American literary and cultural production (e.g. theorizing on race, class and gender; concepts of (inter)mediality; (sub)urban studies).
A sequence of collaborative online international learning with students and instructors from the University Rovira i Virgili from Tarragona, Spain, will enable you to negotiate and apply your newly won understanding of some of the key concepts in American studies.
A reader with the relevant material will be provided. Requirements for successful completion of the course: active participation in the collaborative online international learning exercise and the classroom debate, submission of short assignments, oral exam at the end of the term.
This class will allow students to improve their Reading and Oral Communication competences.

American Women in Cults
Thursdays 12-14
Lit2_BA, Lit 3 G/Ga, VIII/1
R12 RO4 B11
Cults have always thrived in the American landscape, often as attempts to improve upon an environment perceived as spiritually or philosophically lacking. Sometimes cults arrive with new immigrants – American history is immigration – and sometimes they arise from a desire to escape from American or Western culture. American women have endured and escaped from both. We will work our way through the worlds of Somali Muslim, Orthodox Jewish, Evangelical-biblical-literalist and hyper-Calvinist Baptist, Mormon survivalist women. Before the semester begins, try to read Louisa May Alcott’s experiences in her transcendentalist father’s commune, “Transcendental Wild Oats,” (available online here https://public.wsu.edu/~campbelld/engl368/transoats.pdf)
Students should purchase the following:
Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Nomad: From Islam to America: A Personal Journey through the Clash of Civilizations (2010)
Deborah Feldman, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots (2012)
Tara Westover, Educated (2018)
Meghan Phelps-Roper, Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church (2019)
All students: My personal preference, if we meet in person, is for all of us to be (like me) fully vaccinated. The choice is yours, but my chronic condition puts me in life-threatening danger if I am exposed to the Corona virus. Thank you for considering this request.
Requirements: Attend all classes do all readings, engage in class discussions. All students will give a brief (5 minute) talk interpreting—not summarizing-- a scene, a theme, or a character. All students will write a brief (one page) exploration of a passage from the readings. Put the passage into your own words and explain what’s interesting about it.

The participants will learn to use numerical discretization techniques for the modelling of structures. Based on the procedure of linear calculations, students will learn to carry out structural stability analyses employing the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Finite Strip Method (FSM). The students learn the importance of these approaches in the context of geometrical and physical non-linearities. Students will also learn to interpret the results of the calculations as well as the iteration regimes. Towards the end of the course, dynamic analyses of systems are carried out based on the obtained skills.

Thomas Sowell, Intellectuals and Race. Basic Books, 2013.
Ijeoma Oluo, So You Want to Talk About Race. Seal Press, 2018
Peter W. Wood, 1620: A Critical Response to the 1619 Project. Encounter Books, 2020.
Rafia Zakaria, Against White Feminism. Penguin Random House, 2021
John McWhorter, Woke Racism: How a New Religion Has Betrayed Black America. Portfolio/Penguin 2021.
This class will explore American themes as they appear in thinking about race and racism, especially in the wake of highly publicized police killings of African Americans in the last eight to ten years. The ways in which definitions of social justice, DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) programs, and of white privilege evolve in relation to American ideas of equality and American forms of religion will be explored. The above texts—nearly all available as Kindle, too—will be supplemented by online links to essays by writers offering conflicting views of this explosive topic; we’ll read excerpts from Amy Chua, Jill Lepore, Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay as well. Students are invited to contribute writers they find important to the discussion.

Job applications in Germany can differ considerably from those in other countries. This applies to the number of the application documents, the structure and content of the CV / résumé as well as to the addition of a candidate’s photo and of certificates. In this course you will learn to adapt your application documents to the expectations of German employers. Furthermore, the stages of a typical job interview, the most common and critical questions and appropriate answers will be discussed.

This course provides an introduction to the current issues and major theoretical frameworks in discourse analysis. Contemporary approaches to discourse analysis are extremely varied, being situated mainly in three broad groupings, namely "knowledge/information based", "socially situated/context or interaction-based", and "critical or ideology-based". Students will get an overview about the breadth of approaches to discourse analysis by reading original and recent work. They will also acquire hands-on experience of carrying out analysis of a range of phenomena in spoken and written language.
